Charles A. Mills

1929-2003
An Atlantic City native, "Charlie" was its first African-American Architect. He studied Electrical Engineering at the Pratt Institute before serving with the U.S. Army's 822nd Army Corps of Engineers in Korea and Okinawa. He attended classes at Maryland, Michigan and Tokyo universities before being honorably discharged, and continued his professional development at Drexel and Temple universities. Mills served as Director of Housing for Atlantic Human Resources, as a consultant to the National Conference of Black Mayors and as Executive Director to both HOME Inc. and the Atlantic Housing Development Corporation. He served on the Atlantic County Planning Board, Historic Gardener's Basin, Sid Trusty Memorabilia Center, and Westside Little League. He also helped found the Greater Atlantic City Youth Organization-AC Dolphins Football. Mills staunchly supported the NAACP, PleasanTech Academy Charter School and St. Augustine's Episcopal Church.

Additional information:

Charles Mills was a graduate of the Atlantic City High School's Class of 1946. He was of West Indian Heritage, and was said by those who knew him to "exhibit the characteristic honesty, work ethic, and integrity of the Islanders in his work and in his personal life."
