Summer Reading Program to begin June 23 with party

SRP logoThe Atlantic City Free Public Library's popular Summer Reading Program for children and teens runs through August. The program includes reading incentives, fun and educational programs, and more. The program theme this year is “Every Hero Has a Story.”

Some of the library's special programs and reading incentives are sponsored by: Comcast (gold sponsor), and the Atlantic City Aquarium, Baker & Taylor, Ripley's Believe It or Not in Atlantic City, Starbucks Coffee at Tanger Outlets, The Walk and Steel Pier.

KIDS PROGRAMS: JUNE AND JULY
SUMMER READING KICKOFF PARTY

Join us for our Summer Reading Program launch party to sign up for Summer Reading, get a FREE book to take home, and enjoy games, refreshments, magic, crafts and special guests. For ages up to 18.

SUPERHERO STORYTIME

Features stories, songs, finger plays, and simple crafts about and for superheroes. Storytimes are a great way to develop pre-reading skills. Ages 2 to 5.

BABY BOUNCE AND PLAY

Introduce your baby to the world of sounds and stories, and help build important pre-reading skills. Ages birth to 2.

Throw on your lab coat and get ready to experience the fusion of science and storytelling. Participate in several exciting, hands-on experiments that will have you laughing, learning and having fun! We will launch things through the air, send them plummeting toward the ground, and even make things transform and disappear right before your eyes! Enjoy this spectacular adventure and be swept away to a place where 'super' heroes really do exist! Ages 5 to 12

VIKING HEROES AND NORSE SAGAS
Thursday, July 16 at 1 p.m.
Children and their families are able to go beyond the movie image of Thor as they are introduced to the facts and myths about Norse culture and Viking tradition. Get a hands-on opportunity to explore objects from everyday Viking life and discover what made the Vikings heroic explorers. Participate in the creation of a saga and make your own version of the earliest form of Swedish literature, rune stones! Ages 8 to 12.

TWEEN DAYS IN THE TEEN LOUNGE

Not quite a teen? You are invited to rock out in the Teen Space. This is your chance to enjoy gaming with friends: Xbox360 and 1, PS3 and 4, Nintendo Wii. Participants need a library card in good standing to participate.  Ages 9 to 12.

AC HEROES SCAVENGER HUNT (Atlantic City History Museum)
Tuesday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m.
Learn about Atlantic City’s heroes and then go on a scavenger hunt in the museum to earn summer reading points!

OUR MARINE MAMMALS AND SEA TURTLES
Tuesday, July 21 at 1 p.m. (Atlantic City History Museum)
Discover what makes a marine mammal different from a fish, which types of marine mammals and sea turtles come to New Jersey, and the dangers they face while they are here.  Learn about how the Marine Mammal Stranding Center helps our marine friends. All ages.

WETLANDS INSTITUTE
Tuesday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Children will be challenged to discover the special adaptations of sea animals by observing, touching and handling sea animals such as sea stars, urchins, hermit crabs, clams, sea snails and oyster toadfish. Predator prey relationships, food webs, life cycles, anatomy and classification will be discussed. Ages 6 to 12.

BOOK CLUB CHALLENGE: LGBTQ+ AUTHORS AND CHARACTERS
All Month
Read a book, graphic novel, or manga. You can read whatever you want, or pick something that goes with our monthly theme. When you’re done, fill out one of our book review sheets and tell us whether you loved it or hated it and whether we should all read it or not. Bring your sheet up to the youth services desk, we’ll post it up on the board, and you get a prize. June's theme is LGBTQ+ authors and characters, in honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. Suggestions are available on the Book Club Board in the teen space.

MAKE IT! TO GO: GRADUATION HAT GIFT BOX
All Month
Make an easy gift box with a graduation hat topper! Don’t know anyone who’s graduating? Decorate it however you want—it’ll still work! Take home a kit while supplies last. Kits are located in the teen area on the second floor. For ages 10-18. One per person. Available while supplies last.

MARCH MAKER CHALLENGE: T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST
All Month
Follow the instructions and use our makerspace graphic design software to create your own t-shirt design. Designs will be voted on by staff, and the winner gets to use our makerspace equipment and supplies to make their shirt. T-shirt not provided. All participants gets to pick from the prize box and can choose to share their work on the library website.

TEEN ANIME & MANGA CLUB
Mondays, June 8 and 29, from 4–5:30 p.m.
Love anime and manga? Join us to meet others who share your interests, learn about Japanese culture, participate in anime/manga activities, and watch anime! Once our summer programming starts, the club will meet once per week.

The Summer Reading Program has officially begun. The little kids had their party, the crowds have gone home...now it’s time for teens. Ages 13-18 are invited to stay after the official summer kickoff for an afterparty with dancing, snacks, movies, and more. Hear about what’s happening over the summer for teens and get signed up.

GREEN SCREEN PHOTO BOOTH: SUPER POWERS EDITION
Thursday, June 25, from 1–4 p.m. (2nd Floor Children’s Area)
Get your photo taken in front of our green screen and we’ll photoshop you with the super powers of your choice! Shoot lasers from your hands and eyes, levitate, fly, or bend your favorite element. Open to ages 9-18, or younger with parental supervision. We’ll send you the digital photo and print one copy for you.

SUPERHERO COSTUME DESIGN CONTEST
Saturday, June 27, from 3–4:30 p.m. (Teen Lounge)
You have 45 minutes. Using only the everyday craft supplies provided, create a superhero costume for yourself. Don’t forget to come up with your superhero origin story and superpowers! We’ll have a costume show at the end and vote on the best entry. Winner gets a prize!

TEEN SUMMER PLAY CREW & CASTING CALL
Tuesday, June 30, from 4–6 p.m.
Every summer our talented teen volunteers put on a play for the kids of Atlantic City. This year's theme is superheroes. The play is written, directed, acted, and produced by teens including all sets and costumes. Follow the instructions and use our makerspace microphones, software, and other equipment to record a 30-second song in any style. Songs will be shared on the library website, YouTube channel, and Facebook page (with your permission). All participants gets to pick from the prize box.

SILENT LIBRARY CHALLENGE
Thursday, July 2, from 2–4 p.m.
Ever seen MTV’s show Silent Library? It challenges teams to perform ridiculous tasks, all while staying absolutely silent in the library. ACFPL may not be a silent library normally, but this is too funny to pass up. Are you up to the challenge? Ages 13-18.

ALL-DAY ANIME MARATHON & COSPLAY CONTEST
Monday, July 6, from 12–7:30 p.m.
A special edition of our Teen Anime & Manga Club! We'll marathon 7 hours of anime, with a break at 4 PM for a cosplay contest and show. Costumes are optional and do not have to be anime-related. Represent your favorite fandom, whatever it may be!

3D PRINTING WORKSHOP
Thursday, July 9, from 1–3:30 p.m.
Learn how to download pre-made models or make your own 3D designs and print them out in plastic, including jewelry, models and figures, household items, and way more. Each participant will walk away having printed their own tiny 3D Printed trophy on our printer.
