The library, which received a $1,000 award, unveiled the award-winning exhibit in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in October 2015 at its Atlantic City Historical Museum location. The exhibit consisted of photos from the collections of local organizations and residents, and the Atlantic City Library’s Atlantic City Heritage Collections. It also included oral history interviews with local residents from various countries, traditional clothing and memorabilia.
Library archivist Heather Perez coordinated the exhibit. Consultants for this project included historian Vicki Gold Levi, Dr. Merydawilda Colon of the Stockton University Center for Community Engagement and oral historian Dr. Richlyn Goddard.
The award recognizes outstanding library programs that increase understanding and promote multiculturalism through sustainable and creative programming.
“New Jersey libraries play a critical role in helping their community users make cross-cultural connections and develop skills necessary to function in a culturally pluralistic society,” Chute said.
Two other libraries – The Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights and South Brunswick Public Library – were also honored.
