    to be exhibited in September

    The Builders The FamilyThe Atlantic City Arts Commission will present the Jacob Lawrence Centennial Exhibition this September to commemorate the 100th birthday of the famed Atlantic City-born artist. The exhibit will be on display all month on the first floor of the Atlantic City Free Public Library, with a special reception scheduled on Lawrence’s birthday, Sept, 7, from 2-4 p.m. Click here to read more.
  • Summer Reading Program is underway

    Steel PierThe Atlantic City Public Library has kicked off its Summer Reading Program for children and teenagers. Steel Pier in Atlantic City is a sponsor of this year’s Summer Reading Program. Contact the Youth Services Department at (609) 345-2269, ext. 3050, to see how you can qualify for free rides and free snacks at Steel Pier for our end-of-summer party on Aug. 17. The rain date for this party will be Aug. 24. Please call Youth Services to find out whether the party will be moved to the rain date.     job corpsThe Atlantic City Free Public Library will host Job Corps orientations on June 21, July 19 and Aug. 16, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  Job Corps is the largest vocational trade school in the country that provides hands-on training in high-demand industries, such as manufacturing, construction, health care, hospitality, information technology and more. Poetry reading scheduled for April 30 at Main Library

National Poetry MonthApril is National Poetry Month, and the Atlantic City Free Public Library is celebrating by offering a poetry reading at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the Main Library.
Poets Peter Murphy and Karen Zaborowski Duffy, who are both former Atlantic City High School teachers, will read from some of their own works and hold a book signing at the end of the program. The reading is free and open to people of all ages.
Murphy is the author of Stubborn Child, a finalist for the 2006 Paterson Poetry Prize, and a chapbook of poems, Thorough & Efficient. His unique poetry writing assignments have been collected in Challenges for the Delusional (2012), published by Jane Street Press. In addition to receiving a 2009 Poetry Fellowship from the New Jersey Council on the Arts, he has received awards and fellowships from The Atlantic Center for the Arts, Yaddo, The Folger Shakespeare Library and the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. He is the founder/director of Murphy Writing Seminars, which sponsors the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway and other programs for poets, writers and teachers.
Duffy is the recipient of two Poetry Writing Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and is a poetry consultant for the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. She has done residencies at Ragdale, Vermont Studio Center and The Norman Mailer Writers Colony at Provincetown where she was named a 2010 Fellow in Creative Nonfiction. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals, including Calyx, PMS-poemmemoirstory, Salt Flats Annual and Journal of New Jersey Poets. Her poetry manuscript, Pathology of Goodness, was named third runner-up for Boa Editions, Ltd. 2010 A. Poulin Jr. Poetry Prize, and her chapbook, Giving in to the Smoke (2007), received the Starting Gate Award from Finishing Line Press. Duffy’s poem “World Series, Game 5” was featured on The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer in 2007.
