The Atlantic City Free Public Library will offer a Financial Literacy Class Series this spring. A representative from OceanFirst Bank will lead the series. These classes are offered as part of of the Community Center Digital Connect Program (CCDC). 
The late William K. Cheatham left an indelible mark on the Atlantic City Free Public Library – and now his name has a permanent place at the library. The library’s facility at 1 North Tennessee Ave. has officially been named the William K. Cheatham Building. Library and city officials, family and friends remembered Cheatham at a special ceremony April 22 revealing a new sign that bears his name.

Affectionately known as "Josie," Mooney was an Atlantic City native, born in his family home on Morris Avenue, was a player, manager and coach of several local ice hockey teams including the Atlantic City Sea Gulls. Mooney began a seven-decade career in public service as an Atlantic City Lifeguard from 1941-43 and again in 1946 after serving with the US Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of the Atlantic City Police Department (1947 to 1972) and, in 1982 was elected to the first of two terms on City Council where he became Council Vice-President. He was Chairman of the Board of the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority, a life member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol Benevolent Organization, past president and life member of PBA Local 24; VFW Post 9462, Loyal Order of Moose 3216, Catholic War Veterans, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Lions Club, Margate Log Cabin and 1989 Grand Marshall of the Atlantic City St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Additional information: John J. Mooney, Jr. attended the Our Lady Star of the Sea school, Holy Spirit High School, and the Atlantic City Trade School. His time with the US Military included serving as a medic in New Guinea and the Philipines. As a result of his service, he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory medal. He retired from the Atlantic City Police Department at the rank of Acting Captain of Detectives. |
