Library mourns loss of former Director
The Atlantic City Free Public Library was saddened to hear about the passing of its former Library Director Richard Sweeney, who died on May 19.
He was appointed Director in 1971 and held that position until 1976. His contributions included: implementing the borrowing of films, overseeing the creation of a reference collection related to gambling, starting a library index to the local newspapers and managing renovations of the Carnegie Library location.
Richard Sweeney also worked in Atlantic City as a librarian at Central Junior High School and teacher at Holy Spirit High School.
He was serving as the head librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the time of his passing. The Atlantic City Free Public Library would like to send its condolences to Mr. Sweeney’s family, friends and colleagues.
