Library marks Cinco de Mayo with celebration, teen craft

The City of Atlantic City and Atlantic City Free Public Library held a Cinco de Mayo celebration Friday, May 4, in Police and Firemen’s Memorial Plaza, located between City Hall and the Main Library. The celebration included festive music by Ricky y Sus Mariachis and a dance performance by Organizacion Carnaval Putleco (Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township high school students.) Milton F. Ramirez served as the Master of Ceremonies.

The holiday of Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. The victory was a glorious moment for Mexican patriots, and at the time it helped develop a needed sense of national unity.
Also, the library continued the celebration by offering a Cinco de Mayo teen craft program on Saturday, May 5, in the Main Library’s second-floor meeting room. Participants made fiesta mosaic magnets featuring colorful symbols of Mexico, such as the sun, chile peppers and sombreros. Those in attendance also learned about the history of the Cinco de Mayo holiday and Mexican culture.
